Civilian and Soldier

My apparition rose from the fall of lead,
 Declared, ’I am a civilian.’ It only served
 To aggravate your fright. For how could I
 Have risen, a being of this world, in that hour
 Of impartial death! And I thought also: nor is
 Your quarrel of this world.

I hope some day
 Intent upon my trade of living, to be checked
 In stride by your apparition in a trench,
 Signalling, I am a soldier. No hesitation then
 But I shall shoot you clean and fair
 With meat and bread, a gourd of wine
 A bunch of breasts from either arm, and that
 Lone question - do you friend, even now, know
 What it is all about?

Wole Soyinka E’ nato il 13 Luglio 1934 a Abeokuta, vicino Ibadan nella Nigeria occidentale. Dopo gli studi universitari, nel 1954 al Government College in Ibadan, proseguì gli studi all’Università di Leeds, dove, nel 1973, si laureò. Durante i sei anni trascorsi in Inghilterra, svolse lìattività di drammaturgo al Royal Court Theatre a London negli anni 1958-1959. Nel 1960, vinse una borsa di studio e ritornò in Nigeria per studiare dramma Africano. Nello stesso tempo, insegnò letteratura presso diverse università a Ibadan, Lagos e Ife, dove, sin dal 1975, fu docente di litteratura comparata. Nel 1960, fondò un gruppo di teatro, "The 1960 Masks" e nel 1964, l’ "Orisun Theatre Company", attraverso il quale produsse le sue opere e recitò come attore.

Durante la guerra civile in Nigeria, Soyinka chiese con un articolo la cessazione delle ostilità. Per questo motivo fu arrestato nel 1967, accusato di cospirare con i ribelli del Biafra, e fu tenuto come prigioniero politico per 22 mesi fino al 1969. Autore di una ventina di titoli, tra drammi, romanzi e silloge di poesia, le sue liriche sono raccolte in Idanre, and Other Poems (1967), Poems from Prison (1969), A Shuttle in the Crypt (1972) the long poem Ogun Abibiman (1976) and Mandela’s Earth and Other Poems (1988).
