Bulbrokers - USA Stock Markets Daily Review - Aug 5, 2008 Aug 05, 2008, 10:42 CET | Broker’s Report | SeeNews Stocks pulled back from their lows Monday after a big drop in oil prices reduced some of investors’ concerns about rising inflation. The investors on Wall Street traded cautiously ahead of the Fed’s meeting. The Fed is expected to keep interest rates steady at 2%, despite the latest inflation data. Producers’ price index rose sharply in June, due to the higher commodities prices. The forecasts are optimistic, because the market believes that the oil price correction from the last couple of weeks will ease inflation significantly. That might take pressure off the Fed to raise rates as a means of containing inflation. Moreover, the drop in oil appeared to erase some of investors’ worries for the huge jump in consumers’ spending, fuelled by the expensive gasoline. The consumer spending rose by 0.8 % in June - the biggest jump in the indicator since a 1% rise in February 1981. June US factory orders also jumped at their fastest pace in six months. The report reflected increase s in petroleum prices and heavy demand for military equipment. Orders rose by 1.7% in June, more than double what had been expected. Despite that investors showed no clear reaction to the news. The investors’ attention continues to be focused on the corporate earnings reports for the second quarter. Today after the end of the session Cisco Systems Inc., News Corp. and Procter & Gamble Co. are expected to report earnings. link

Karoll - SOFIX Short Term Outlook - Aug 4, 2008 Aug 05, 2008, 09:23 CET | Broker’s Report | SeeNews After the SOFIX made a temporary low at 1111 at the beginning of May this year, a rally attempt followed, however the prices could not move sustainably abv the 1259 key Fibonacci level. The subsequent decline in late June and in July brought decline below the 1111 level and currently the index is trading near and below the 1000 level. The Medium-Term prospects remain unchanged and we are confident that the decline from the October 2007 top corrects the entire previous rise from 2001 low to 2007 top. As said previously, the minimum requirement for this decline is to bring prices into the 700-900 zone - only then this decline will be considered to be of the same degree as the previous advance. Of course, that is only the minimum requitement and the decline from the October 2007 top can reach much lower levels (twd 550) before this bear ends. link

Romanian National Bank - Inflation Report August 2008 - Summary Aug 05, 2008, 12:03 CET | State Agencies Reports | SeeNews Developments in inflation and its determinantsIn June 2008, the 12-month inflation rate stood at 8.61 percent, a level almost unchanged from 8.63 percent in March. This development validates the previous projections of the National Bank of Romania according to which the rise in inflation that began in 2007 Q2 would come to a halt in 2008 Q2. While supply-side factors had diverging effects on price increases, aggregate demand pressure acted as a deterrent to disinflation, which accounts to a large extent for the CORE2 inflation rate rising further in June over March 2008.In 2008 Q2, disinflationary effects came mainly from the significant slowdown in the growth rate of administered prices and volatile prices of some food items such as vegetables, fruit and eggs. Opposite effects were exerted by the prices of processed food making up about 38 percent of the CORE2 inflation basket, which saw faster year-on-year rates of increase than in the previous quarter, reflecting the build -up of pressures on the agri-food market. Moreover, fuel prices rose at a considerably swifter pace as a result of surging oil prices on global markets.Unit labour cost kept rising January through May 2008 owing to labour market tensions, generating inflationary effects through both cost-push pressures and the contribution of increasing wages to excess demand. The persistence of cumulative effects of inflationary shocks during the past four quarters resulted in a steady worsening of inflation expectations, which further induced second-round effects on CORE2 inflation in the quarter under consideration. The strong acceleration of economic growth (up to 8.2 percent) in 2008 Q1 translated into significantly stronger excess demand pressures, thus contributing to higher CORE2 inflation in 2008 Q2. The key driver of the rapid GDP growth was the surge in both investment and final household consumption, underpinned by sizeable increases in household and corporate income and credit to the private sector, as well as by the substantial advance in publi xpenditures earlier this year. The widening share of imports in domestic demand caused an increase in the negative contribution of net external demand to GDP growth, despite an acceleration of export growth.Monetary policy since the release of the previous Inflation ReportAfter examining the most recent macroeconomic developments, the Mayinflation forecast and its related risks, the NBR Board decided to raise the monetary policy rate to 9.75 percent per annum in its meeting of 6 May 2008. link

Raiffeisen Capital & Investment - Macro Romania - Standard & Poor Release on Romania’s BICRA - Aug 5, 2008 Aug 05, 2008, 10:37 CET | Broker’s Report | SeeNews Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services said that it has raised its Banking Industry Country Risk Assessment (BICRA) on Romania to Group 7 from Group 8. At the same time, Standard & Poor’s changed its estimate of the incidence of gross problematic assets (GPAs) in the Romanian financial system under a reasonable scenario of economic recession to 25%-40% from 35%-50%. The BICRA upgrade reflects (i) the good growth and profitability performance of the Romanian banking sector, following several years of a healthy growth pace and accumulating wealth in the economy, and (ii) massive inflow of foreign investments into the banking sector, which has created a solid funding base for credit acceleration. The upgrade also reflects the stronger banking penetration and services coverage, and advancing banking technologies in the Romanian banking sector. These were to a large extent led by the import of Western banking technologies, EU convergence requirements, and the start-up of the adoption of Basel II principles. link
