ISAF Ambassadors affirm strong commitment to Afghanistan
North Atlantic Council (NAC) Ambassadors and their ISAF partners led by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met with the Afghan President Hamid Karzai on 18 March. The Secretary General stressed ISAF’s determination to support the upcoming elections and bring in more forces to secure the country.

Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland celebrate 10 years in NATO
The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer travelled to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland on 11-13 March 2009. His visit coincided with the 10th anniversary of these countries’ entry into the Alliance.

NATO resumes anti-piracy operations
NATO will resume counter piracy operations off the Horn of Africa later this month after the North Atlantic Council (NAC) gave final approval for the mission. Operation Allied Protector is NATO’s continuing contribution to international community efforts to enhance the safety of commercial maritime routes and international navigation in the area.

Marking its 60th Anniversary Summit, NATO will spotlight Allied efforts in Afghanistan through a campaign in the capital where the North Atlantic Treaty was signed to found the organization.

“Six colours”: a new and fresh perspective on the Alliance
“Six colours” is a series of short videos illustrating the impact of NATO activities on the daily lives of citizens. A DVD will be launched on the occasion of the NATO Summit in Strasbourg/Kehl on 3-4 April 2009 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Alliance.

Milan conference on NATO’s ongoing evolution
On 12 - 13 March 2009 in Milan, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart organized a two day conference entitled “1949-2009: Sixty Years of the Atlantic Alliance between Continuity and Transformation”. The conference was sponsored by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, the Centre of High Defence Studies of the Italian General Staff and the Army Military Command in Lombardy.
