La soprano Tefta Tashko Koço, una delle figure rilevanti dell’interpretazione vocale in Albania, con la sua voce bellissima e autentica, durante la sua breve carriera ha sfoggiato un incredibile talento eseguendo sia musica lirica cittadina che un ricco repertorio di musica classica operistica. L’articolo ricostruisce le tappe più importanti della sua vita. Nata in Egitto nel 1910, attiva sin da piccola nella vita artistica di Korça, formata musicalmente a Parigi e Roma, l’usignolo albanese che regalò emozioni indescrivibili al pubblico dell’epoca, si spense di cancro ancora molto giovane, lasciando un vuoto incolmabile nella musica albanese.

In this issue of the Ukraine CSR Bulletin, Ukraine 3000 Foundation and McDonald’s Ukraine Present McHappy Day Results; DLA Piper Announces National Scholarship for Law Students; and DTEK Contributes to Educational Initiatives, Creates Corporate University.

* Ukraine 3000 Foundation and McDonald’s Ukraine Present McHappy Day Results

On March 26, the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and McDonald’s Ukraine presented the results of their joint initiative, McHappy Day, conducted in November 2009. During the press conference organizers announced that their joint action had raised UAH 1,055,000 to be used to purchase defibrillators and spare electrode sets for 22 children’s hospitals in Ukraine. Since 2005, World Children’s Day at McDonalds is held in partnership with the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation. Thanks to the money collected in the 2005 appeal, family rooms in the Oncology Institute at the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine were remodeled and renewed. In 2006, the Healthy Heart of a Child campaign led to the purchase of cardio equipment for 18 children’s hospitals in Ukraine, while in 2007, equipment for emergency aid and electric pumps for children were purchased for 30 hospitals in all regions of the country. Then in 2008, 29 children’s hospitals received reanimation equipment for newborns.

* DLA Piper Announces National Scholarship for Law Students

On March 30, international legal practice DLA Piper announced its fourth-annual DLA Piper National Scholarship Competition for Law Students. The competition, for which competing students must write an original essay, is open to all law students of Ukrainian universities. DLA Piper lawyers from around the world will review the essays and shortlist 20 students. A panel of judges consisting of well-known Ukrainian law experts will then select four winners. Three students will be awarded internships at DLA Piper law offices abroad or in Ukraine, while a fourth student will receive a monetary scholarship for the next year of university. The competition is supported by the Ukrainian ministries of justice, education and science and the Coordination Council of Young Lawyers at the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice. * DTEK Contributes to Educational Initiatives, Creates Corporate University

On March 22, DTEK, a leader in the fuel and energy sector of Ukraine, together with Dnipropetrovsk National Mining University signed a long-term cooperation contract. The joint work envisions DTEK working with the university to adapt the latter’s curriculum in respective spheres to meet the demands of the coal mining industry, find the most promising students and invite them to work at the company after graduation. The university, in turn, will be able to update its courses based on advanced techniques and methods, receive a new laboratory for practical studies and provide jobs for the best graduates. On November 3, 2009, DTEK signed a similar agreement with Donetsk National Technical University to train specialists in areas of the company’s specialization. On March 17, DTEK also announced the launch of its own corporate university. The DTEK Academy will be a common center for knowledge management among all the different enterprises of the company, which employs 50,000 people. The DTEK Academy will train approximately 1,500 of the energy holding company’s best employees each year in specialized programs. Top managers from DTEK and professors from leading Ukrainian and European business schools will lead courses at the academy.

Parchi industriali in Ungheria: nuova struttura a Kaposvár

Il consiglio locale di Kaposvár, nel Sud Ovest dell’Ungheria, ha deciso di approvare la costruzione di un nuovo parco industriale, con un investimento da 665.045 euro circa. Il Sindaco Károly Szita ha annunciato che i lavori sono iniziati martedì scorso, con un supporto UE da 68,5 milioni di fiorini e ha aggiunto che il parco dovrebbe attrarre almeno 6 industrie e creare un minimo di 50 posti di lavoro. Hearings of the Farid Babayev’s Murder Case Resume Tomorrow

Tomorrow, on April 1, 2010, in the Supreme Court of Dagestan the hearings of the case of Farid Babayev’s murder (public figure and human rights activist, the head of "Yabloko" party in Dagestan region) will resume.

Relatives of Babayev say that there are only two or three sessions left before the court rules the case.

The previous hearings took place on February 26, 2010.

Human Rights Center Memorial hopes that those guilty of the Farid Babayev’s murder will be punished.

OSCE Chairperson discusses with Ukraine leadership shared priorities, deepening co-operation

KYIV, 31 March 2010 - The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakhstan’s Secretary of State and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev discussed in Kyiv today key aspects of the dialogue on European security between participating States of the Organization, and how the OSCE could support the domestic priorities of the new leadership.

"This is the first high level meeting between the OSCE and the new leadership of Ukraine," he said. "Ukraine plays an important role in the region, and we intend to work together to achieve our common goal of strengthening mutual understanding and trust in the sphere of responsibility of our Organization within the framework of the Corfu Process."

Saudabayev met with Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn, Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Hryschenko and representatives of political parties. He will meet Prime Minister Mykola Azarov later today.

"The recent Presidential Election in the country, which met most OSCE and international commitments according to the international observation mission’s interim report, is a victory of democracy in Ukraine, and the OSCE stands ready to provide further assistance as requested," Saudabayev said at the news conference following the meetings.

The Chairperson-in-Office highlighted the fruitful co-operation between Ukraine’s authorities and the OSCE’s Project Co-ordinator acting in accordance with its mandate in such areas as promoting democratization and good governance, as well as combating corruption and human trafficking.

He stressed the importance of joint activities, including a continuing large-scale project to dispose of thousands of tonnes of melange, a highly toxic obsolete rocket fuel component. More than 1,500 tonnes of melange have already been removed from Ukraine’s territory. "The OSCE-Ukraine initiative is an excellent example of tangible and effective co-operation that contributes to the security of people living in the OSCE area," said Saudabayev.

During the meetings in Kyiv, Saudabayev expressed gratitude to Ukrainian leadership for its support for Kazakhstan’s initiative to hold an OSCE summit in 2010 and extended an invitation to the country’s Foreign Minister to the informal ministerial meeting to take place in July 2010 in Almaty.

On his part, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister positively assessed the performance of Kazakhstan as the OSCE Chairmanship.

The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office will travel to Moldova for meetings with the Moldovan government and Transdniestrian leadership on Thursday.
