BELGIUM - Moldovan Consular Staff in European Countries Targeted in Anti-Trafficking Training
Moldovan staff in embassies in the 11 countries of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and at the European Commission will be given specific training on 25 November in Brussels on human trafficking in a bid to improve the level of support for Moldovan victims abroad.
Moldova is a mainly source country for the human trafficking of women and girls for sexual exploitation and of men for forced labour. Turkey, Russia, Cyprus, the UAE and other Middle Eastern and western European countries are the major destination countries for women while men are trafficked to work in the construction, agriculture and service sectors in Russia and other European countries.
The training, hosted by Council of the Baltic Sea States’ Task Force Against Human Trafficking (CBSS TF-THB) in collaboration with the Swedish Institute, will mark the first anniversary of an on-going partnership between IOM in Moldova and the CBSS TF-THB.
The training given by CBSS TF-THB, Swedish authorities and IOM, aims to raise levels of knowledge on the crime among Moldovan consular staff and to provide participants with tools to better assist victims.
As embassies and consulates are often the first contact point between citizens and their home countries whilst abroad, better informed consular support is critical to ensuring better protection of victims at their most vulnerable.
The training will provide participants with basic information on human trafficking flows into and within Belgium, a better understanding of the phenomenon and international and national law surrounding it and practical information on handling cases of human trafficking.
Information on specific measures required for assisting child victims of trafficking will also be featured.
The training in Brussels is the latest in a series that began a year ago for Moldovan diplomatic and consular staff based in Copenhagen. This was followed this year by trainings in the Estonian, Icelandic, Lithuanian and Finnish capitals.

Giuseppe Iampieri - Serata di beneficenza
26 novembre 2009 - ore 19

* Telegraf: number of Muslims in Latvia is growing
* Concord Centre concluded an agreement on co-operation with Russia’s governing party United Russia
Telegraf prints an article about Muslims in Latvia. According to the article, number of Muslims in Latvia is growing. Presently, there are 12 Muslim associations in Latvia and about 5,000 - 10,000 Muslims living in Latvia. According to Latvian Imam Mamud, Islam has negative image in society due to large amount of negative information in media and lack of knowledge among general public about the religion. Director of the Latvian Centre for Human Rights Ilze Brands Kehris considers the majority of Latvian Muslims are representatives of traditionally Muslim peoples of the former Soviet Union. Mrs. Brands Kehris also considers that problems and discrimination in Latvia are mostly facing Muslims who came from Asian, African and West European countries, while the main problem for the whole Muslim community in Latvia is absence of Mosque.
The Concord Centre concluded an agreement on co-operation with Russia’s governing party United Russia. According to representatives of the Concord Centre both parties share many positions and opinions. Social scientist Aigras Freimanis considers that such agreement might hinder co-operation of ethnic Latvian parties with the Concord Centre. Chas, Telegraf, Latvijas Avize, Diena
