A tense situation that has lasted a few weeks in the north of Kosovo is a consequence of both the government’s decision to place ethnic Albanian officials at border checkpoints there and the opposition to that decision by the Serbian community living in the territory. The escalation of the conflict led to the suspension of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. These events did not prevent Serbia from obtaining a recommendation from the European Commission on 12 October for candidate status for EU membership, but the further integration of Serbia into the Union will depend on the constructive course of the Serbia–Kosovo talks.
