President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy met today the Prime Minister of Albania, Sali Berisha. This is a summary of his remarks to the press delivered at the end of the meeting.
"Prime Minister Berisha represents a country that has made its political vision and ambition very clear.
I would like to use this opportunity as well to reiterate my strong commitment to the EU integration perspective of the entire region of the Western Balkans.
The Prime Minister informed me about the submission to the Commission of Albania’s replies to the questionnaire following the application to join the EU.
We discussed Albanian domestic political developments, and I confirmed to the Prime Minister that the EU was following these developments with great interest and attention. Last year Albania had parliamentary elections. These elections were a crucial test of democracy and Albania’s progress towards readiness for EU membership.
We briefly discussed visa liberalisation. I understand the importance the Prime Minister attaches to it and I am convinced the Commission will undoubtedly make a solid, objective assessment and act accordingly.
We discussed the questions of regional stability and cooperation. I would like to acknowledge the constructive contribution of Albania to regional stability and to the region’s security challenges.
Allow me to wish Albania continued success as it progresses on its path towards the EU."
