As of end-April 2009 gross external debt* was EUR 36,554.9 million (107.9% of GDP**) and decreased by EUR 174.9 million (0.5%) against the end of 2008 (EUR 36,729.8 million, 107.7% of GDP). The debt decrease was mainly due to the decrease (by EUR 612.5 million, 6.7%) of Banks’ liabilities. Compared to end-April 2008 (EUR 31,354.9 million) the debt increased by EUR 5,200 million. As of end-April 2009 long-term liabilities amounted to EUR 23,367.5 million (63.9% of total debt), and short-term liabilities came to EUR 13,187.4 million (36.1% of total debt).

Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić says that he believes Serbia will be able to join the European Union without recognizing Kosovo’s unilateral independence. In an interview with weekly Vreme, Jeremić said that he expected the question of Kosovo’s final status to be resolved before entrance into the EU, and that further dialogue with Priština and an agreement “acceptable to all” would be found after the International Court of Justice gave its opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s independence declaration.

Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin said on Wednesday that Serbia joining the EU would not stand in the way of good ties between Belgrade and Moscow. Speaking in Bela Crkva the top Russian diplomatic envoy to Serbia said that military relations have also been improving.
