As of end-August 2008 gross external debt was EUR 33,611.1 million (98.8% of GDP) and increased by EUR 4,756.9 million (16.5%) against the end of 2007 (EUR 28,854.3 million, 99.8% of GDP). This was mainly due to the increase of Banks’ liabilities (EUR 2,760.3 million, 47.8%). By end-August 2008 long-term liabilities amounted to EUR 20,743.6 million (61.7% of total debt), and short-term liabilities came to EUR 12,867.5 million (38.3% of total debt).

According to BVB regulations, the General Director can decide to temporary suspend the trading if the main index (BET) records a day-on-day decrease of 12%. If the BET index records a 15% decrease compared with the last closing, the trading is suspended for the whole trading session. Today’s trading was suspended when the BET index went down 8.49%. If adjusted for Banca Transilvania weight in the main index (28.95%), which is currently suspended from trading, BET recorded today a negative performance of 12%, triggering a temporary closing of BVB.
