INDUSTRY FOCUS: RFID Technology in Retail - Part II Jun 01, 2009, 15:29 CET | Story | AII Data Processing Ltd Applying RFID in the retail sector makes it possible to track every product from the moment when it is produced to the moment it is sold in the retail chain. This is being done thanks to the RFID tag, placed upon production. The antennae and the reading devices, installed in warehouses, logistic centres, stores or at cash registers, identify the tag of a certain product and via specialised software the information is stored and processed. The rfid.bg site offers a model scheme for working with a radio frequency identification system:- upon the product’s entry into the storehouse, the system registers it and files it as „in stock”. On the basis of this information, the operator can get instructions as to where to place the product;- once the product leaves the storehouse, the system registers it and sends a signal for reduction under a given quantity; - the product’s entry is registered on the way in; - when the product leaves the storehouse on its way to the shelv es, the system could send a signal for quantity reduction; - the antennae installed at the store’s cash register allow for automatic registration of the sale and establishing a connection with the system for automatisation of the payments; - used packaging can also be tracked before recycling.RFID tags fall into two groups – depending on power supply and on their capabilities of reading and recording information. The first group splits into passive tags – fed by a signal coming from a reading device, active tags – containing a battery that enables them to read from a longer distance and could have an in-built microprocessor and feature additional functions, and semi-passive tags, where the battery serves to feed the chip, but does not transmit radio frequency energy. Depending on their reading and recording capabilities the tags can be Read Only or RO, programmed with a serial number, hence they can be identified by the reader; Write Once Read Many or WORM, where the information is fed to the chip only once and Read Write or RW, ere information can be в changed over and over again. http://seenews.com/news/latestnews/_zakiko_industryfocus_rfidtechnologyinretail-partii-142442
