Croatian Bureau of Statistics - Innovation Activities in Cratian Enterprises - 2004 - 2006 - June 2008 Jun 27, 2008, 13:51 CET | State Agencies Reports | SeeNews The share of enterprises with innovative activities in Croatian economy is 27.7%. Innovative enterprises are more frequent in the industrial sector with over 37% (37.3%) than in the service sector where innovative enterprises make less than 1:4 (22.8%). Innovative enterprises can also be analysed according to the number of persons in employment. It is notable that innovators are more frequent among large enterprises (55.6%), than among medium enterprises (39.3%) or small enterprises (23.0%). Innovative activities are in great measure conditioned by financial resources and human potential under firm’s management and it is, therefore, to be expected that larger enterprises would be more innovative than smaller ones. Croatian enterprises are predominantly directed to local and regional markets – covering several regions. At the same time, number of innovative enterprises in that group is the smallest (38.2%). The share of innovative enterprises is significantly larger in t he group of enterprises declared to be present on foreign markets, whether it be markets of EU, EFTA or EU candidate countries (41.7%) or markets of other countries (43.2%). Presence on large number of markets can be identified as a creativity-inducing activity because it introduces the concept of competition to a larger extent. There is 27.7% recorded share of enterprises with innovative activities among Croatian enterprises in the period 2004-2006. Product and process innovation are usually simultaneously introduced in an enterprise. Innovative enterprises introducing both types of innovation are at the same time more frequent among industrial enterprises (24.0%), which is by 14.2% more than the share of innovative enterprises in service sector (9.8%) (Table 4). Innovative enterprises are more frequent among larger enterprises (55.6%) than among medium enterprises (39.3%) or small enterprises (23.0%). Introduction of a new product or process in large measure is preconditi oned by size of the enterprise. Larger enterprises more often simu neously introduce product and process innovations (36.7%) than medium (22.8%) or small enterprises (11.2%). Industrial enterprises are, compared to service enterprises, more inclined to introduce intramural (in-house) R&D, as well as acquisition of equipment and software. On the other hand, service enterprises are more inclined to introduce extramural R&D, patents, non-patented inventions and know-how. Acquisition of machinery, equipment and software is the most frequent type of innovation expenditure among Croatian enterprises (86.8%). Both industrial enterprises (88.1%) and service enterprises (85.8%) are using this type of innovation activities to the nearly same extent. Training is the second most frequent expenditure for innovation activities and it is slightly more often used by service enterprises (76.0%), than industrial enterprises (73.7%).
