Bulbrokers - USA Stock Markets Daily Review - May 23, 2008 May 23, 2008, 10:00 CET | Broker’s Report | SeeNews Range trading on US stock marketsStocks rebounded modestly on Thursday after two sessions of sell offs on high energy prices. Meanwhile, oil prices pulled back below 132 dollars a barrel after set another trading record overnight moving above 135 dollars per barrel. The Labor Department said the number of workers seeking unemployment benefits declined by 9 thousand last week to 365 thousand as the market expected a slight increase. Investors now hoped that oil’s price pullback could deal a significant expand to the economy rising consumer spending which accounts more than two-thirds of US economic activity. On the other side rising oil drives up transportation costs and many other expenses for businesses that aren’t directly dependent on consumers. Overall most analysts expect the oil price to continue it’s up trend and even reach targets around 200 per barrel.In corporate news, Ford Motor Co. warned that it no longer expects to return to profitability by next year and that it is reducing North American production of pickups and SUVs for the rest of this year because of high gas prices and a shaky economy. The automaker also lowered its forecasts for US sales for 2008. Ford fell 7.3 % to 7.23 dollars per share. Power wholesaler NRG Energy Inc. said it offered to acquire rival Calpine Corp. for about 11.3 billion dollars in stock. NRG fell 4.1 % to 40.78 dollars per share while Calpine jumped 7.7 % to 22.91 dollars per share. link
