Presidential elections in Romania: no mystery

Some useful information about forthcoming Presidential elctions by our correspondent George Popescu
Saturday 10 October 2009, by Emanuele G. - 237 letture

The presidential elections in Romania will be organized on 22nd of November 2009 with a second round (if none of candidates will obtain more than 50% of votes) on 6th of December.

Potential candidates for these elections are:

- Traian Basescu – actual president, supported by Democrat-Liberals

- Sorin Oprescu – actual Bucharest Mayor, independent

- Mircea Geoana – president of Social-Democrats

- Crin Antonescu – president of Liberals

- Gigi Becali – president of New Generation Party

- Corneliu Vadim Tudor – president of Great Romania Party

Mircea Geoana and Crin Antonescu declared since December 2008 that they will candidate for this function, while Traian Basescu and Gigi Becali confirmed only today their candidature “by surprise”. We are waiting in next days for Sorin Oprescu and Corneliu Vadim Tudor.

Despite the financial crisis which affects Romania, since November 2008 parliamentary elections, all politicians, from all parties are focused only on presidential elections. Mass-media is also focused on this, because the patrons of media trusts have interests in politics. Most of media trusts are against Traian Basescu and claim this all day long, so it is possible that this type of action offers him a “victim” position and to gain sympathy from the people.

Until this week, the political scene was somehow confuse, Social-Democrats being in alliance with Democrat-Liberals in the Government. But Social–Democrats resigned on 1st of October, after a scandal related to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr. Dan Nica, who declared that he has information that it will be frauds in presidential elections. It was strange, because he was the person in charge for the organization and surveillance of elections, so the Prime Minister Emil Boc asked to Social-Democrats to change this person. Not at all surprising, Social Democrats decided to leave the Government, this being a good occasion to claim that they tried to help Romania in crisis, but with such allies it is impossible to work.

In realty, all other candidates, except Democrat-Liberals, are fighting against Traian Basescu, who generated a lot of personal enemies during his mandate as President. Politicians are convinced that the Government will be changed after the new president will be installed; Mircea Geoana declared in public this few months ago. The situation could be favorable for actual President, because all his enemies are discussing about how bad is Traian Basescu and meanwhile he is building a positive campaign based on his personal projects for Romania. We shall see if the projects and the charm of President will be stronger than the coalition against him.
