WARSAW—The first round of the Polish presidential election will be held on June 20, the acting president’s office said Wednesday.
The presidential election is being held early after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash on April 10.
Acting President Bronislaw Komorowski, the speaker of Poland’s lower house of Parliament, is the favorite to win, according to opinion polls conducted after April 10.
In line with the election schedule announced by the acting president, committees must register with the State Electoral Commission by April 26, presenting 1,000 signatures of voters in support of their candidate.
By the end of May 6, the committees must register their candidates presenting the list of 100,000 signatures of voters.
If no candidate wins more than 50% of votes during the first round of voting, a second round will be organized between the two candidates who received the highest number of votes.
