VIENNA, 14 April 2010 - The OSCE is ready to help Kyrgyzstan restore the rule of law, public order and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, the Chairperson of the OSCE Permanent Council, Ambassador Kairat Abdrakhmanov said today.

In a special meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, Abdrakhmanov reiterated the need to resolve the political situation and restore a legal framework for the country’s leadership.

"The rule of law and democratic policing must be restored everywhere - there can be no more bloodshed," Abdrakhmanov said.

Outlining possible objectives for the OSCE in Kyrgyzstan, he also said the Organization, its Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Representative on Freedom of the Media were ready to assist in efforts to restore the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms to all parts of the country.

Abdrakhmanov called on all sides to renounce further violence and to work toward peaceful constitutional reform and new elections. He also emphasized that public safety had to be restored in all parts of the country.

The OSCE Chairmanship will regularly inform the OSCE participating States on developments and consult them on a plan to support the restoration of stability and development in the country, he said, adding that any action would be agreed with the Kyrgyz side.

The Permanent Council is one of the OSCE’s main, regular decision-making bodies. It convenes weekly in Vienna to discuss developments in the OSCE area and to make appropriate decisions.
