BISHKEK, 27 May, 2009 - The OSCE Centre in Bishkek and the Central Election Commission hosted a meeting today that focused on preparations for the 23 July presidential election and proposals in support of international and OSCE election standards.
Representatives from the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry and OSCE participating and partner States, as well as international and national civil society partners, took part in the meeting. The agenda included discussions on equitable representation in election commissions; promoting voters’ rights and responsibilities; domestic and international observation; preventing misuse of administrative funds and resources, and candidates’ free access to the media.
"The meeting updated participants on electoral preparations and identified further measures to support transparency, accountability and public awareness throughout the electoral process," said Ambassador Andrew Tesoriere, Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek. "Yesterday, Kyrgyz authorities sent an official invitation to the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to observe this election."
Damir Lisovsky, Chairman of Central Election Commission, added:
"Today’s meeting was constructive and productive. Besides briefing participants, we listened carefully to their views and answered their questions. We would like to reiterate that the CEC will ensure equal conditions for candidates and respect of the electoral rights of voters. Any attempts to infringe the country’s election law would be prevented. The Presidential election will be conducted in an open and transparent manner, in strict observance with the law.
"The Commission considers elections a key political and legal instrument in building a stable civil society and for the sustainable development of the state. The presence of international observers increases the authority of elections and contributes to their openness and helps the process fulfil international commitments. In this regard, Kyrgyzstan appreciates the support of the international community."
The first similar meeting was held in April 2009.
