NATO initiates security investigation
A decision by NATO Defence Ministers on Alliance Counter-Narcotics strategy was taken in Budapest in October 2008, according to which ISAF can act, in concert with the Afghans, against facilities and facilitators supporting the insurgency, in the context of counter narcotics.

Hungary celebrates 10 years in NATO
On 29-30 January, the Szeged Centre for Security Policy – supported by the Hungarian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and NATO Public Diplomacy Division – organized the first event to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Hungary’s membership in NATO, along with the Alliance’s 60th Anniversary.

First NATO depository library opens in Kyrgyzstan
NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Robert Simmons, inaugurated the first NATO depositary library in the Kyrgyz Republic at the Diplomatic Academy of Bishkek on 2 February. It is the third NATO depository library in Central Asia, the other two being in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan.

New on NATO TV: Expanding internet connectivity in Afghanistan
Named after the Great Silk Road trading route linking Asia and Europe, the NATO Virtual Silk Highway (SILK) provides affordable, high-speed Internet access via satellite to the academic communities of the Caucasus and Central Asia. The SILK project is operational at Kabul University, Afghanistan, since 2006, and is now looking into expanding the network to the provinces.

SPS workshop rethinks approaches to cyber security
Experts from Israel, Italy and several other NATO countries will attend the SPS-sponsored workshop “Operational Network Intelligence: Today and Tomorrow” to be held on 6-7 February 2009 in Venice, Italy. The overall purpose of the workshop is to rethink present strategies and identify urgent measures to be taken in order to minimize the strategic and economic impacts of cyber attacks

Safeguarding the transport of dangerous goods
The first seminar on the transport of dangerous goods will take place in Brussels’ Royal Military Academy, Belgium, on 10 -12 February. Civilian and military experts from NATO countries will take stock of what has been done and what remains to be done in safeguarding the transport of dangerous goods, especially in the field of training and standardization.
