Nato: Science for Peace and Security information day in Kazakhstan

An information day on NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme will take place on 24 June 2009 at Al-Farabi University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event was planned to coincide with the Euro Atlantic Partnership Council Security Forum to be held in Astana on 24 and 25 June 2009.

High-level representatives from national authorities, academics, other experts, and students from Central Asiawill discuss priorities and challenges for Central Asiain the field of security and science.

The Central Asian country representatives to the SPS Committee will provide an overview of activities in their respective countries under the SPS Programme.

The information day will focus on the achievements of key projects supported under the SPS programme in Kazakhstanand in the wider region, including:

* the Virtual Silk Highway, which provides internet connectivity through National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Central Asiaand Caucasus, including Afghanistan;

* the destruction of the rocket fuel oxidizer, Mélange, in Uzbekistan;

* SPS training courses on defence against terrorism, including border security.
