The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia commends the unanimous stance of the leaders of the EU member states in supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemning in strict terms the acts of aggression committed by Russia in Georgia.

The European Union expressed its support for concrete and effective measures aimed at Georgia’s integration with the European Union. The European Union also endorsed the Plan for Georgia’s economic deconstruction and development and adopted concrete decisions in this regard.

The European Union will establish a strict monitoring over Russia’s implementation of the six-point ceasefire plan. Also, the European Union will immediately engage in developing international mechanisms for conflict resolution based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.

Russia was confronted with the choice either to act henceforward as a responsible, reliable and civilized state respecting the universally recognized norms of international law and international commitments or to doom itself for isolation.

Georgia remains committed to the ceasefire agreement achieved on the basis of the European Union’s mediation efforts, welcomes the decision on immediate implementation of the aforesaid agreement and will cooperate intensely with respective European Missions to achieve withdrawal of all Russia troops from the territory of Georgia.

Georgia welcomes the decision regarding the European Union’s active participation in developing an international monitoring mechanism in the conflict regions. It is this international effort that will in the shortest possible terms replace additional Russian military troops deployed on the territory of Georgia outside the conflict zone, as provided for in point 5 of the ceasefire agreement.

Georgia also attaches a paramount importance to the European Council’s decision to further strengthen the European Union’s role in securing a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflicts in Georgia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia positively assesses the European Union’s decision to postpone meetings on the negotiation of the Partnership Agreement with Russia until Russian troops have withdrawn to the positions held prior to 7 August, as stipulated in the Ceasefire Agreement.

Georgia expresses its readiness to cooperate actively with European partners as well as EU institutes to ensure full and timely implementation of the decisions of the Extraordinary European Council Meeting.
