On 1 September 2008, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Belarus D. Zalkaliani passed to a representative of the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk A. Shevchenko a Note of the Georgian Foreign Ministry indicating that through its hostile actions against Georgia, in particular, large-scale military aggression, invasion of a part of the Georgian territory, ethnic cleansing in Georgia’s integral parts – Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region and illegal recognition of their so-called independence, the Russian Federation has disrupted the earlier existing peace format stipulated by the CIS documents.
Therefore, Georgia adopted a decision on the termination of CIS peace support operations in Abkhazia, Georgia in compliance with the first paragraph of the 2003 decision adopted by the CIS Council of Heads of State on the ‘presence of collective peacekeeping forces in Abkhazia, Georgia and measures of further resolution of the conflict’.
Georgia demands fulfillment of all obligations regarding the withdrawal of peacekeeping contingent and munitions within the terms indicated in the aforesaid decision.
