United Islands: Presidency and beer barrel handed over to Sweden
On Saturday evening, the United Islands Festival – one of the Czech Presidency’s closing events – hosted a happening during which the Czech Republic informally handed the Presidency over to Sweden.

Czech Presidency rounds off European Council with success
Chaired by the Czech Presidency, the European Council gave the green light to the guarantees for Ireland so that a new Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty can take place. The Council also agreed on the new European Commission leader; it found consensus on conclusions concerning climate change and reached political agreement on the new European framework for financial supervision.

EU-Pakistan Summit - Joint Statement
The first EU-Pakistan Summit was held in Brussels on 17 June 2009. The EU was represented by President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic; by Mr Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, by Dr Javier Solana, High Representative for the EU’s Common and Security Policy. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan was represented by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Statement on Guantanamo Closure Endorsed on Both Sides of the Atlantic
The EU and the United States on Monday endorsed a joint statement on the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, at the same time marking a fresh start in counterterrorism cooperation based on shared values, international law, the respect for human rights and the rule of law.
