 Microsoft Opens its Second Center for Innovation in Kharkiv

On March 10 the second Microsoft Center for Innovation was launched at the Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics. The Center is a scientific and research platform that provides students, teachers and IT specialists with opportunities to develop and test new IT solutions. The main objectives of the center are to increase the quality of the university’s technical education by specializing in cutting edge information technology, as well implementing and expanding innovative IT projects. Microsoft’s Centers of Innovation operate in more then 60 countries worldwide in close cooperation with local universities.

 Centre for CSR Development Releases Second CSR Review

The Centre for CSR Development has released its second monthly CSR Review, which targets several important issues in CSR development in Ukraine and monitors CSR development in different countries. Among the issues covered in the current review: does Ukraine need to develop a national concept for CSR development?; the difficulties companies face when developing social reports; an update on the development of international ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility; a look ahead to new projects in the field of CSR in Ukraine, plus other relevant information.

 Second Ukrainian Business Summit on Climate Change in Kyiv

On March 24, United Nations in Ukraine, Global Compact Network Ukraine, and "Kommersant" newspaper, with endorsement from the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine, will host the 2nd Ukrainian Business Summit, entitled "Climate Change: Global Approaches and Local Responses" (to be held in Kyiv at the Premier Palace Hotel). The main goals of the summit are to discuss up-to-date issues and trends in development of ecological responsibility in Ukraine and abroad and to draw the attention of the business community and authorities to the problems of global climate change. Participants will discuss consequences and the results of the Copenhagen summit; the role of business in climate change mitigation; introducing new innovative environment protection business-models; state facilitation of ecological responsibilities of business; the necessity of public-private partnerships; and other issues. The summit will bring together more than 150 participants from Ukraine, Russia and other European states, including top managers of leading companies, representatives of Ukrainian Government, expert and scientific communities, international and non-profit institutions, CSR specialists, regional authorities, businesses, and socio-political media.  Interpipe Named Industry Leader in Ukrainian ecology

Steel pipe and railway wheel-making company Interpipe has been recognized as an industry leader in Ukraine for its environmental protection work in the country. The recognition came from the Environmental Protection Ministry of Ukraine, which awarded Interpipe for Ministry’s project "Ecology, environment and nature management in Ukraine". Over 2006-2009, Interpipe completed eight nature conservation projects that were part of a program of ecological improvement in Dnipropetrovsk region. More than UAH 1.7 million was spent on the project.

UniCredit ha inziato a investire nella Central & Eastern Europe fin dal 1999 con l’acquisizione di Bank Pekao. Nel 2005, grazie all’aggregazione con Hvb, il Gruppo UniCredit è diventata una delle principali realtà bancarie internazionali nell’area. Federico Ghizzoni, responsabile Cee Banking Operations del Gruppo, in un’intervista pubblicata su Camic Magazine, l’organo ufficiale della Camera di Commercio italo-ceca, parla di Cee, del ruolo della Repubblica Ceca e delle previsioni per il futuro.

Il Gruppo UniCredit è molto attivo in Europa centro-orientale. Quanto pesa questa regione sul business del Gruppo?

La CEE (Central & Eastern Europe) rappresenta ormai una realtà indissociabile dal gruppo UniCredit. Abbiamo cominciato a investire direttamente nella regione nel 1999, con l’acquisizione di Bank Pekao in Polonia, e da allora il nostro impegno è stato in costante crescita. Con l’acquisizione della tedesca HVB nel 2005, che già controllava Bank Austria e diverse banche nella CEE, siamo diventati di gran lunga la più importante realtà bancaria internazionale nella regione, con posizioni di leadership in molti Paesi. Siamo quello che si può definire un "player di sistema" praticamente in ogni Paese, con un forte radicamento sul territorio. Attualmente, siamo presenti come banca commerciale in 19 Paesi dell’Europa centro-orientale, inclusa la RepubblicaIn termini di ricavi, la CEE rappresenta oggi circa il 25% dei ricavi del Gruppo e circa il 50% dei suoi profitti. Si tratta quindi di una regione strategica e redditizia per noi. Inoltre, i Paesi della CEE non rappresentano soltanto un business, ma contribuiscono notevolmente anche all’identità del gruppo UniCredit.

La crisi finanziaria del 2008- 2009 ha avuto conseguenze ovunque. In che modo il gruppo UniCredit ha affrontato e superato la crisi?

Per prima cosa, è stato importante tenere sempre a mente i fondamentali. Il nostro portafoglio crediti nella regione è buono, la nostra gestione del rischio è prudente e i nostri rapporti con i clienti solidi. Il Gruppo ha continuato a fare utili nei Paesi della CEE nel corso del 2009, a testimonianza della qualità del nostro business. In secondo luogo, abbiamo rafforzato dove necessario la nostra attenzione al costo del rischio e fatto accantonamenti prudenziali su tutto il portafoglio crediti. In Paesi più difficili, come il Kazakhstan, abbiamo creato una task force per valutare con estremo rigore il nostro portafoglio. In Ucraina, la nostra banca locale nel 2009 ha saputo ottenere risultati positivi malgrado un contesto macro-economico difficile e una situazione di grande pressione per il sistema bancario locale. Le azioni di monitoraggio del rischio nella CEE che avevamo intrapreso prima che la crisi scoppiasse in tutta la sua intensità ci hanno aiutato, oltre naturalmente agli interventi delle istituzioni internazionali, quali il FMI, la BERS, la stessa UE, che hanno contribuito a stabilizzare la situazione macroeconomica, evitando il collasso che alcuni prevedevano, grazie anche al buon coordinamento che c’è stato fra queste istituzioni internazionali e le principali banche.

All’interno della Central & Eastern Europe, che ruolo ha la Repubblica Ceca?

È un Paese per noi molto importante, nel quale vogliamo crescere. Pensiamo che in termini macro-economici la Repubblica Ceca sarà uno dei primi Paesi a uscire dalla crisi e a ritrovare la via della crescita, grazie all’assenza di grossi squilibri strutturali e alla presenza di un sistema industriale e bancario solido e di una moneta che ha retto bene alla crisi. Nel 2010 e nell’arco dei prossimi due-tre anni, UniCredit Group investirà sulla espansione in Repubblica Ceca.

UniCredit appare oggi come un gruppo allo stesso tempo italiano ed europeo. In che modo la vostra presenza in CEE aiuta il Made in Italy?

Ritengo fondamentale la diffusione capillare dell’attività a livello locale. La CEE è un immenso mercato per le imprese italiane e la nostra rete è a loro disposizione per aiutarle nella loro crescita e sviluppo. In tutti i Paesi, abbiamo creato dei "Desk Italia", guidati da specialisti, che sono al servizio delle imprese italiane offrendo loro prodotti, servizi e consulenza. In Repubblica Ceca, abbiamo deciso di estendere il concetto di Desk Italia con l’apertura di una filiale dedicata agli stranieri con particolare focus sui servizi alla clientela italiana, sia sul segmento retail sia su quello corporate, ma anche attivando altre iniziative, come Imprendo Export, che aiuta le aziende italiane alla ricerca di partner locali a individuare gli interlocutori giusti e ad assisterli nel loro progetto. Direi che il nostro radicamento sul territorio e la nostra visibilità sono la carta migliore che possiamo offrire al Made in Italy in cerca di opportunità a medio-lungo termine nella CEE.

Quali le previsioni per il 2010?

Il 2010 sarà ancora un anno di transizione, ma si ritornerà a parlare di crescita, probabilmente a partire dal secondo semestre, crescita che i nostri economisti prevedono intorno al 2 % in media per l’intera CEE. Da parte nostra, continueremo la politica di controllo e gestione del rischio che ha caratterizzato il 2009, ma non ci limiteremo ad attendere che la tempesta finisca del tutto, vogliamo anche attrezzarci per la schiarita.

In questo senso UniCredit Group, pur rimanendo cauto sul costo del rischio, guarderà attentamente alle opportunità di business e di impieghi. Il nostro obiettivo è di crescere in maniera organica, facendo leva sulla rete ineguagliabile che abbiamo nella regione. A differenza di altri gruppi che stanno adottando strategie di ridimensionamento del loro impegno nell’area, per noi la Repubblica Ceca fa parte dei Paesi dove vogliamo investire e incrementare la quota di mercato.

Un settore particolarmente colpito dalla crisi è il comparto immobiliare. Anche in questo caso prevedete una ripresa nel 2010?

Sicuramente si tratta di uno dei comparti economici più colpiti dalla crisi, e non prevediamo per quest’anno grandi cambiamenti, anche se riteniamo che anche in questo settore si dovrebbero percepire segnali di ripresa già dalla fine dell’anno. Più in generale riteniamo che il peggio sia passato, e che si possa guardare al futuro con un cauto ottimismo.

 Chechnya: in Kurchaloev and Gudermes districts private houses are demolished. People are homeless

After New Year holidays in Kurchaloev and Gudermes districts of Chechnya construction works have been started, notably "works on dismantlement of condemned buildings". In the centre of Kurchaloy village a lot of governmental buildings and several private houses were demolished. The inhabitants were suggested to leave their homes where their forefathers lived for 160-180 years before and to move to lodgings. New houses were promised to be built at the suburbs for them. In addition several decrepit buildings were demolished but their owners were not even promised anything.

The same situation is in Gudermes. Nearly all streets of the town are digged over and closed.

On February 25, 2010 the representatives of the town administration (as they named themselves) came to the inhabitants of the cottages on Gheleznodorojnaya Street and demanded to leave the houses in 3 days explaining that the quarter should be demolished. If not the houses would be demolished without their consent. The residents of the whole quarter were obliged to leave their houses. The plots of land for these cottages were bought out before by them. Since March 1st the houses are being demolished. The residents were not offered anything in exchange and they have to find new homes.

In Gudermes since autumn a lot of families were evicted and only few of them got accommodation in exchange. All their houses were demolished.

It is interesting that none of the residents protested against the demolition of their houses. Moreover neither the mass media nor ombudsman in Chechnya worries this matter.

 OSCE Chairperson’s Special Envoy welcomes Montenegro’s determination to continue reforms

PODGORICA, 16 March 2010 - The Special Envoy of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Konstantin Zhigalov, welcomed Montenegro’s determination to continue its pro-democratic reforms during a visit to Podgorica today.

"We are encouraged by the progress in Montenegro’s reform process," he said. "However, there are some important areas where further work is needed, including the fight against corruption and organized crime."

Zhigalov noted that Montenegro was playing an important role in strengthening stability, security and co-operation in the region and added that the OSCE encouraged the country "to continue in this direction".

In meetings with Deputy Prime Minister Svetozar Marovic, Foreign Minister Milan Rocen and Deputy Parliament Speaker Rifat Rastoder, Zhigalov also discussed the country’s reforms.

"The OSCE Mission to Montenegro and the host country have developed a strong partner relationship to implement and consolidate the reform process," he said. "The OSCE is ready to continue supporting Montenegro’s efforts to increase stability and prosperity."

Zhigalov also briefed meeting participants on the plans of the Kazakh OSCE Chairmanship, including an envisaged informal ministerial meeting to take place this summer in Almaty.

"This meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to discuss matters including the Corfu Process, the Vienna Document 1999, the OSCE’s engagement with Afghanistan and the substance of an OSCE summit," he said.
