- A European voice in the UN Security Council. Austria’s non-permanent membership 2009/2010.

3 March 2010 - Sala Ludwikowska, Polonia Palace Hotel - Al. Jerozolimskie 45, Warsaw

demosEUROPA - Centre for European Strategy, the Embassy of Austria to Poland and Polonia Palace Hotel cordially invite you to a speech by Michael Spindelegger, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria.

Amidst discussions on a new role for the United Nations and on the possible introduction of a single European voice in the Security Council, Mr. Spindelegger will share the experience of Austria as a 2009/2010 non-permanent member of the Security Council. With Vienna as one of the UN seats, Austria has always considered the United Nations as the primary centre for successful multilateral cooperation. It is the third time Austria holds a seat in the Security Council, but this time it is also a member of the European Union. The membership in the EU gives its role in the Security Council an additional European angle.

Minister Spindelegger will take questions from the audience after his speech, which will be delivered in English.

Michael Spindelegger assumed the office of Austrian Foreign Minister in December 2008. Before, he served as a Member of the European Parliament and of the Austrian Parliament where he represented the Austrian People’s Party. He holds a PhD in law.

Afghanistan: Loyal Political Opposition Feeling Left Out in the Cold BY AUNOHITA MOJUMDAR

Violence in Afghanistan pays and offering the criticism of loyal opposition does not. So thinks Abdullah Abdullah, the losing presidential candidate in Afghanistan’s 2009 election. In an interview with EurasiaNet in Kabul, Abdullah derided Afghan government plans to contain the Taliban insurgency, complaining that new policies could end up undermining democratization and increasing the chances of renewed inter-ethnic strife.
