Dal 2007, Ermal Meta, con altri tre musicisti di Bari, ha fondato la band pop-rock La Fame di Camilla. Quest’anno, prescelti per la categoria Nuova Generazione, portano a Sanremo la canzone "Buio e Luce”, scritta e cantata da Ermal. "Buio e luce sono figli del sole" dice il testo, come per dire che il buio non può impedire il ritorno della luce del sole, che la ragione non può cancellare l’identità del cuore.

 "Clean-up Operation" in New Aldy: Approaching the Tenth Anniversary of the Tragedy

On February 4, 2010, a press-conference for the "Clean-up Operation" in New Aldy: Approaching the Tenth Anniversary of the Tragedy took place at the Independent Press-centre. During the conference, the film "Aldy. Without a statute of limitations" prepared by HRC Memorial was also shown. Chairman of Board for HRC Memorial, Oleg Orlov recalled the tragic events of February 5, 2000, when during a "clean-up operation" in the village of New Aldy, Chechnya the civilians were massacred—56 individuals were gunned down. "Today in Russia compliance has become common place: "I can no longer bear the chaos, the gross violence and lawlessness which the representatives of the law-enforcement agencies commit toward us, the simple citizens of Russia." It is for us to consider whether or not the developments have constituted a consistent and straightforward investigation into those events which occurred ten years ago in Chechnya, and in particular, in the village of New Aldy, because that specific "clean-up operation" committed by the representatives of the law-enforcement agencies. It was predominantly carried out by members of the Saint Petersburg OMON," said Orlov.

The film "Aldy: Without a period of limitation,” prepared by members of HRC Memorial was presented. The personnel of a documentary video, made by the villagers of New Aldy on April 9, 2000, are at the heart of the film as well as interviews with eye-witnesses of the events, recorded by members of HRC Memorial in January and February of 2009. El’vira (Madina) Dombaeva—an eyewitness of the events of February 5, 2000—addressed the press-conference. El’vira was one of the main characters in the film. At the conference she once more recalled the dreadful hours and days which she had to live through ten years ago when three of her relatives were murdered. Immediately after the events, the people were afraid to speak about what had happened, 10 years later the fear has past—the pain remains. "The war had turned out to be absolutely nothing before this day...These weren’t people. Today they live peacefully—having lain us bear us, robbed us, killed us...Ten years have past since then. I am dead. I don’t live—I exist, I exist for the sake of those I still have," stated El’vira.

Alexander Cherkasov, a member of the Board for HRC Memorial, spoke about the criminal case and its initiation into the facts of the massacre of the New Aldy residents. Cherkasov remarked that "this crime is comparable with the criminal acts by Hitler’s deathsquads during World War II. The HRC Memroial expert also brought our attention to different bloody events of the Chechen Wars—the "clean-up operation" in the village Samashki (1995) and the pillaging and murders in the village Alkhan-Yurt (1999) (for the amended and edited text of the address see HRC Memorial’s site: http://www.memo.ru/2010/02/05/0502102.htm).

The criminal case hasn’t been looked into and no one has been called into account; therefore the European Court of Human Rights looked into the Aldians’ complaint.

Tat’yana Chernikova, a lawyer with HRC Memorial, talked about how on July26, 2007, the court in Strasbourg ruled that Russia had violated the European Convention on Human Rights. The aggrieved party was paid compensation; however, the Russian law-enforcement agencies failed to conduct an effective investigation into the matter. "The failure to perform the second part of their obligations—conducting an effective investigation—is the systemic problem of all the cases involving crimes, committed by the representatives of the Federal security agencies in the North Caucasus," pointed out Chernikova. We want to receive, not formal responses that a search is being conducted and all of the necessary steps for the investigation are being undertaken, rather answers as that which they are, real answers…We will watch over the fulfillment of the European Court’s decisions,” stated Chernikova (an edited text of Tat’yana Chernikova’s address can be found on HRC Memorial’s site: http://www.memo.ru/2010/02/05/0502103.htm).
