The OSCE and other international observers have been unanimous in their conclusions: the first round of Ukraine’s Presidential election was both fair and transparent. Still, it’s not clear for what and why Ukrainian voters cast their ballots. What impact did the international community have on this election? How should the results be interpreted and are there any surprises in store? What could happen to change the situation between the two rounds? Last but not least, where are the hidden obstacles in the run-off?

Individual victims and collective remembrance:
Representation and the Holocaust in Austria, Germany and Italy

During the XXth century the traditional memorial has undergone a radical transformation, thereby attesting how memory can be perpetuated through new kinds of artistic interventions, which question the apologetic character that has always been historically typical of monuments. Under the definition of counter-monument (as James E. Young calls it) – some sort of anti-monument, or inverse monument – it is possible to include a few works which, in Germany and Austria, celebrate the tragedy of the Holocaust and constitute an a posteriori reflection on the Shoah. The Harburger Mahnmal gegen Faschismus ( 1986 -1993) and 2146 Steine (1993), both by Jochen and Esther Shalev-Gerz, together with Rachel Whiteread’s Memorial (1996- 2000), are a few exemplary realizations of this new typology, which start from the idea that the only "solid and heavy" memory is personal memory. Instead of working on the notion of celebration, they think that the artist has to evoke the terrible void left by the extermination. For what concerns Italy, the Monumento ai caduti – made between 1945 and 1955 by BBPR (Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti, Rogers) at Cimitero Monumentale in Milan – can be a perfect example to question about the problem of individuality of the victims and collective character of the remembrance.
