CarNet: REGION: Bishkek hosted regional review meeting of the Environment and Security Initiative

Regional review meeting of the Environment and Security Initiative took place in Bishkek.

The initiative focuses on preventing of conflicts that can potentially be caused by poor quality and distribution of natural resources, support of friendly relations among the neighbor states, including creation of cooperation models and cooperation through implementation of concrete projects in the environment area.

The aim of the regional meeting was to inform participants about the current activity of the Initiative in Central Asian countries, including information about concrete projects.

Participants of the meeting discussed the priority area of the future activity of the Initiative for 2009-2012, proposed in the work programme of ENVSEC in Central Asia and selection criteria for ENVSEC projects.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of international organizations involved in ENVSEC activity – UNDP, OSCE, UNEP, WB and others.

Besides that, the meeting was attended by Mr. Marko KAyner, Director, Environment, Habitat and Land Use Unit, UNECE, who has been chairing ENVSEC in 2009.
