7 April 2009 in Moscow Secretariat of the Integration Committee of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) the EurAsEC Deputy Secretary General Mr. Sergey Glaziev held a meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Mr. Neal Walker. The meeting was also attended by the Stats-Secretary of the Ministry of Emergencies of the Kyrgyz Republic Mr. Turatbek Junushaliev, the Representative of the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic on EurAsEC issues, staff members of the UNDP Office in the Kyrgyz Republic and the responsible officials of the Secretariat of Integration Committee.
The parties exchanged views on further cooperation of the two organizations under the Memorandum of Understanding between EurAsEC and UNDP signed in 2006. In particular, they discussed the issues of coordination of efforts towards re-cultivation of the areas of what used to be uranium tailings in the Central Asian countries within the frameworks of implementation of the joint Appeal of the Kyrgyz Government, EurAsEC Secretariat and UNDP to the governments, internationalfinancial institutions and development agencies on the hazard of radioactive contamination in Central Asia.
The EurAsEC Secretary General informed on the activities carried out by the Community’s member states towards development of an inter-state target programme named "Re-cultivation of the areas of EurAsEC members states exposed to uranium-mining productions". The UNDP Resident Representative informed on the process of preparation to the international conference to take place on 21-24 April of this year in Bishkek and to the international forum to be held on 29 June of this year in Geneva regarding re-cultivation of uranium tailings in Central Asia. Both events are organized to attract the funds of donors, business community and governments to resolve this problem. The importance of the cooperation with EurAsEC on this issue emphasized by the UN management and its regional offices was noted. The meeting’s participants re-confirmed their intentions to continue the active cooperation on all the issues discussed.
